Having previously undertaken work on Trade Skills Centres in Western Sydney and the Illawarra region, JPA&D were pleased to be engaged to design and document nineteen trade skills centres in 2015. Facilities to promote training in the areas of hospitality, metalwork and construction were undertaken at locations stretching from Moruya on the New South Wales south coast to Lake Macquarie on the Central Coast. The projects included a mix of project types, refurbishment of existing facilities and new-build projects including new trade skills classrooms and covered outdoor work areas (COWA’s).
New build projects such as the new construction facility at Ashcroft High School included storage areas for tools and equipment, a small room for planning projects and a well-equipped work area with ducted dust extraction. The internal work area and material store opened onto a secure covered outdoor work area. Sturdy materials such as split faced concrete block and profiled steel cladding were used to create a robust building and a dramatic downturn to the roof form provided additional weather protection to the outdoor work area.
